Preventing new risks,
reducing existing risks, and managing residual risks present a major challenge
that requires coordinated and collaborative action. The Department of Disaster
Management aims to provide in-depth subject knowledge to the master's students
of the disaster management. In addition, the department aims to develop a critical
thinking among students, researchers, and
professionals working in disaster related fields in the UT of Ladakh. The Department of
Disaster Management was established in 2023 at the Kargil Campus of the
University of Ladakh. The department offers a 2-year Master’s Degree Programme.
The two-year course is designed as per the New Education Policy regulations.
The Department provides opportunities in many areas of disaster management for
students, including understanding hazard and disaster scenarios; vulnerability
and risk assessment; rehabilitation and recovery; economic and financial
aspects of disaster; remote sensing mapping; and risk-sensitive landuse planning. in addition, a remote sensing lab is functional in the department to impart the geospatial skills for effective mapping and management of the disasters. The students are also encouraged to work on minor projects, enabling them to
compete in the emerging field of research and innovation.
